When sunlight hits the photovoltaic cells on the solar panels, it creates a flow of electrons that produces an electric current. This current runs through an inverter, which converts it into a usable form of power. The power produced can be used immediately or stored in a battery system for later use.
Solar panels can last for up to 25 years or more with proper maintenance. A microinverter or string inverter which is responsible for converting the energy from DC to AC, has an average lifespan of 15 years.
Unfortunately, no, as solar panels require some type of inverter that is connected to the utilities grid. If you decide to include a battery bank in your solar system, the stored energy can be used during an outage as a backup power source like a gas/propane generator.
While going solar may be not be right for everyone, there are many benefits to making the switch: Saves money on electric bills, reduces carbon footprint and GHG emissions, can increase home value, clean source of energy, can be used in remote areas where there is no grid to rely on.
A Net Meter is a secondary utility meter that is installed next to your primary utility meter. During the months that you are producing more than you are using with your solar panels, your local utility will keep track of that over production as credits. You will use everything you produce first, and the excess production will be tracked through your Net Meter. You can then use those banked credits later in the year during the months that you are not producing enough to cover your electric bill.
